Get rid of illegal gambling, Tuaran Council is told
TUARAN: Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Mohd Noor wants the district council to crack the whip on illegal gambling here."I have received a lot of complaints regarding premises that had been turned into illegal gambling centres," he said at the swearing-in of 20 new Councillors for the 2015-2016 term at the District Council here, Monday.

"The matter had also been raised several times by Tamparuli Assemblyman Datuk Seri Wilfred Bumburing during the State Legislative Assembly.

"I urge the district council to take serious action against those involved by disconnecting the electrical and water supply especially among the ones who refuse to quit running their illegal activities," he said.

Towards this end he urged all urged the local authorities to be effective in their law enforcement and to cooperate with other government agencies as well as police.

He called on them to double their efforts in implementing their duties to help the government achieve the nation's Vision 2020.

"The year 2015 will be very challenging to all of us and this year we will also see the end of the 10th Malaysia Plan. By next year we will start off with the 11th Malaysia Plan," said Hajiji.

The success rate of achieving the Vision 2020 depends on the government agencies as well as local authorities' implementation of plans for the nation's development, he said.

"The local authorities play an important role in assisting the government to achieve a well-developed country status," he said, stressing the importance of efficiency in terms of the district council's customer services as well as the beauty and prosperity of the district.

"The district council must set up more public facilities for the people as well as come up with policies to generate the economy besides assisting the locals to earn their own income.

"Therefore, commitment and cooperation from all parties is important to ensure the development of the district," he said, adding that Tuaran is now known to be a suburban district with its location situated not too far from the capital city.

Hajiji who is also Sulaman Assemblyman spoke of the district's potential in the tourism industry due to the beauty and uniqueness of the people's culture as well as nature.

"Due to these aspects, the district council carries heavy responsibilities in maintaining and improving the beauty of the district."

Besides that, Hajiji also asked the district council to take immediate action against irresponsible individuals who were found to have abused the People's Housing Programme (PPR) units offered by the government.

According to him, there were reports on some PPR recipients who rent out their homes to others and worst, to illegal immigrants for up to RM700.

"These tenants must be blacklisted. We must never give opportunities to those who are not qualified because at the end of the day, the blame will be put on us leaders," he said.

Hajiji also asked the district council to ensure the correct usage of Bahasa Malaysia especially on billboards and business signboards.

"I have received lots of complaints by the people especially from those at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).

"We are not trying to prevent the people from using other languages but we must understand that Bahasa Malaysia is our national language and also part of the government's policy, therefore, we must use it well," he said.
