Kudat, S'kan villages  hit by flash floods
Kudat: A total of six families comprising 13 people, including a pregnant woman, were evacuated to higher ground after flash floods hit low-lying areas in Kg Tamalang Jalan Tai Cheong, here, Wednesday. However, nobody was hurt. State Fire and Rescue Department Public Relations Officer Mohd Affendy K. Ramin said the families comprising an adult man, five women, four boys and three girls were evacuated for safety reasons.

At about 10.04am, the water level had gone up to knee-high, prompting the families to be shifted to relatives' houses on higher ground. They are still being sheltered at their relatives' houses at press time. This was the second flood incident in the district. Earlier this month, some 913 people were reportedly evacuated to temporary relief centres after flash floods hit the district on Jan. 4.

In Sandakan, a total of three families comprising 12 people in Rancangan Sungai Manila, Mile 12, were evacuated to higher ground after flash floods hit their village.

District Fire and Rescue Department Chief Andree Andrew said seven personnel rushed to the scene after receiving a call at about 7.05am.

Andree said the first evacuation involved five flood victims, namely an elderly woman, three adults and one baby, while the second evacuation involved two victims, also senior citizens. The third evacuation involved five people comprising a senior citizen, two adults and two children.

The operation ended at about 9.24am after all have been taken to their relatives' houses on higher ground.

Sandakan Municipal Council Deputy President Mohd Hamsan Awang Supain, who is the District Disaster Committee Chairman, identified several villages hit by flash flood, namely Kg Gum-Gum, Sg. Batang, Mile 8, Mile 5, in front of Petronas kiosk to the front of the Mile 6 Forestry Department, in front of the hospital up to the roundabout at Mile 11/2, BDC and the road in front of the Sim-Sim cemetery.

A tree was also reported to have been uprooted in Taman Samudera, Mile 5. Hamsan said although the temporary relief centre has not been opened at press time, they are on the alert and prepared for any possibilities.

It was also learnt that a minor erosion occurred near several houses at Kg Sundang Darat on Wednesday.

It was understood that four houses were damaged in an erosion which occurred in the village three years ago.
