Chance for Sabahan youths to work at Shanghai Disneyland
Kota Kinabalu: Fancy working in Disneyland? About 1,000 jobs will be available exclusively to Sabahans at Shanghai Disneyland and other animation companies throughout China.A collaboration between Sabah Institute of Art (SIA) and Shanghai Yan Pei Professional Animation College in offering professional animation courses will open the doors to locals interested to do animation work in the republic.

SIA Chief Executive Officer Prof. Dato' Dr Wilson Yong said the programme, set to accept applications beginning this March, is open to anyone and everyone who has a passion for animation and graphics.

"We are not particular about the students' past qualifications because we believe that should the students have the passion for creativity and graphics, they will perform well in this course.

"Furthermore, when the students have completed their course, they can be selected to work with Shanghai Disneyland or other animation companies in China. Of course, the students must show exceptional performance and be very skilled," he said at a press conference Wednesday.

He also said qualified lecturers and trainers from Yan Pei Professional Animation College and Art Academy from Selangor would train the students in animation courses lasting six months and 12 months.

SIA, in conjunction with the programme, is also collaborating with the Young Malaysian Movement (YMM) to organise a roadshow around the State.

Its Chairman, Deric Chiew, said the roadshow would begin at Kota Kinabalu on Jan 17, followed by Sandakan on Jan 23, Lahad Datu on Jan 24 and Tawau on Jan 25.

"We initially added Beaufort and Tenom into our roadshow but due the flood problems there, we decided to reschedule that to a later date," he said, adding that the programme would be an excellent platform and a great opportunity for local youths keen on the animation field.

Meanwhile, SIA Business Development and Communication Manager, Rizal Malik, said the State has much talent but still not nurtured as there are no specific programmes for them to pursue.

"One of the reasons why Sabah was chosen is because of the abundance of raw talents here and I believe this programme would be great opportunity for the students to work with top animators from Malaysia and China.

"We hope with the skills and training gained, the students come back to Malaysia and cultivate our animation industry that is in need of evolving and catching up with the world." Rizal also said this is a certificate programme because most of the young creative adults are coming from the rural areas with no opportunities to further their studies and that this would become a platform for them to get necessary skills before they are sent out into the market.

He added SIA assisted by Yan Pei College would provide the necessary facilities for the programme including software for the course and for students with poor language skills, extra courses would be given to help them improve.
