Kota Kinabalu: A non-governmental organisation, Pakatan NGO Pro BN has called on the police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Federal Attorney-General office to be more proactive against those who spread lies and false information in cyber space. Its President Zulkarnain Mahdar said these three important government agencies play vital roles to reinforce existing laws in regard to such serious offence and in carrying out activities to enhance public awareness on the danger of spreading lies that tantamount to defamation, slandering and stirring up peace and harmony.

"I noted that irresponsible people and quarters are active in creating and spreading lies in the social media network like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp either to meet their own personal agenda or worse, to defame and slander and humiliate certain leaders.

"There are three top leaders that have always been the target of these irresponsible people, namely our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and our Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman," he said.

Zulkarnain said this to reporters after handing over a memorandum to Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Nazneen Zulkifli at the Federal A-G office at Federal Administrative Complex building here.

The same memorandum was also submitted to the Karamunsing police station and MCMC headquarters here which urged the three agencies to be proactive and take stern action on those found spreading lies and defamation in the virtual world.

"The latest lies that went viral in Facebook was about the mother of Chief Minister who was said to be an Indonesian. This is a blatant lie about the mother of our Chief Minister. I am sure the irresponsible person purposely created lies to instill doubts among the locals in Sabah when in fact the Chief Minister's mother is a Dusun from Keningau.

"Not only this, there are many lies and fake information that have been created and went viral in social media like the number of 40,000 Bangladeshis supposedly brought to our country as phantom members during the 13th General Election which created apprehension among the people, in the country," he said.

Zulkarnain said it is imperative the three agencies bring the offenders and masterminds to the court.

He also recommended that the three agencies organise talks, briefings and campaigns in Sabah to disseminate information and educate the public on the danger of spreading lies and false information in the Internet and printed media.

In a related development, Zulkarnain said the organisation will also carry out a large scale anti- defamation campaign to be launched at state level here soon by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Movement Chairman Ezam Mohd Noor.
