Kota Kinabalu: Safety and health concerns on and off the workplace will no longer be the responsibility of employers alone. From this year, individuals too would be able to attend programmes on the topic as the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) in Sabah plans such seminars on a monthly basis.

The topics would also be more focused and appealing to a much broader audience as the fees will be sharply reduced.

Sabah revenue hits RM6.97 billion: Hajiji says GRS State Government may see full term
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.
In the past, Niosh in Sabah only organised its safety and health seminars upon requests and when a need arises and they were charging around RM400 a day.

Although, the institute recorded an increase in the number of courses it held with a total of 231 courses in 2010, 256 courses in 2011, 342 in 2012, 441 courses in 2013 and 565 courses last year, they want them to be more affordable to all.

And for the past five years 35,861 individuals have attended all their safety courses in the State, Lee said.

"This is a low cost approach and Niosh is not a profit making organisation but holds a vital social responsibility. We want our service available to all at an affordable price," he said.

Its first seminar is scheduled for Jan 21-22 and will be titled Understanding of C.L.E.S.S., Chemical Handling for Industries and Public Sectors.

Participants can visit the Niosh website to register for the seminars.

Lee also said Niosh will also begin to provide consultation services to any agencies and departments in the State on formulating their own occupational, safety and health system this year.

Among others, Niosh in Sabah will also sign a Memorandum of Agreement with UiTM on Niosh Safety Passport soon and launch its second Safety Passport course with Sabah Foundation this year.

Meanwhile, Lee said the fourth Borneo Occupational, Safety and Health Conference will be held in Kuching, Sarawak this year with 700 participants expected to attend the event.

Niosh is a body authorised by Standards Malaysia to certify bodies of various types of industries in safety and health, including food and environment.
