Rape of five girls: Suspect held

Tawau: Police have arrested the man who allegedly raped five girls at a housing area in Mile 3.5, Jalan Apas, here, after their grandmother lodged a police report on Tuesday. District Police Chief ACP Awang Besar Dullah said the suspect, in his 30s, was nabbed during a raid led by ASP Ridzuan Khalid on Thursday.

He said the man, an illegal immigrant, was apprehended following a tip-off and has been remanded for 14 days beginning Friday.

"We thank those who channelled information which led to the arrest of the man," he said, adding the man does not have any past criminal record.

Prior to that, police had launched a hunt for the Visaya man who allegedly raped five girls aged between six and nine years in 2013 and 2014 after the girls' 64-year-old grandmother lodged a police report.

Two of the girls are in Year Four, one in Year Three, one in Year Two and the other in a pre-school in town.

Awang said preliminary investigation showed three of them were staying together with their grandmother, while two others stayed at their parents' house and sometimes came by to her house.

According to him, the girls knew the man because they were neighbours and that the man was invited to stay at their home for the past six months because he was well mannered and helped take care of the girls.

The incident was said to have occurred four times, with the first victim claiming she was raped in the living room in February last year, the second victim who just arrived from Indonesia in July last year was allegedly raped in the bedroom, the third victim claimed she was taken advantage of in 2013, while the fourth victim claimed she was raped in the bedroom.

The fifth victim claimed to have been brought to the man's office after he persuaded her to go with him. It was said that there was nobody in the office at the time.
