Critical roads along stretch to be upgraded

Beaufort: The Works Ministry plans to upgrade critical roads along the Kota Kinabalu -Sindumin stretch that are often affected by floodwaters.Deputy Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said the proposed upgrading works would involve raising the surface level so that these roads would be passable to vehicles.

At the moment, she said four Federal roads along the stretch have been identified as critical main roads totaling 2.32 kilometres that need to be tackled immediately.

"I was made to understand that several roads in Bongawan, Membakut, Beaufort and Sipitang were impassable to vehicles for the past two to three days which made it difficult to those ferrying various assistance to flood victims.

"The identified roads are Jalan Beaufort–Menumbok from Km1.5 to Km1.8 involving 0.3km (300 metres) at Kg. Bingkul area, another stretch Jalan Beaufort–Menumbok from Km4.3 to Km4.4 involving 0.1km (100 metres) at Kg. Bingkul area, Jalan KK –Sindumin from Km75 to Km76.5 involving 1.5km at Sungai Damit, Membakut and Jalan KK–Sindumin from Km121.4 to Km121.8 involving 0.42km (420 metres) after the Weston junction near Sipitang," she said.

Rosnah who is also Papar MP said this to reporters after visiting flood victims and presenting various basic food, sanitary pads, milk powder, diapers, snacks, toothbrushes and toothpaste to 243 families involving 706 people at the Dewan Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Dun relief centre on Friday.

Also present were Infrastructure Development Assistant Minister Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar cum Umno Papar Deputy Chief, Umno Beaufort Divisional Chief Datuk Isnain Aliasnih, Umno Beaufort Wanita Chief Siti Aminah Acing, Public Works Department Deputy Director Amrullah Kamal, Beaufort District Officer Mohd Shaid Othman and other officials.

Together with Ghulam and Amrullah, she said they are going to the ground to see and assess roads including critical ones that are often affected by flood and heavy rain throughout the year.

"So far, we have identified the four Federal roads along the Kota Kinabalu – Sindumin stretch and a total of 36 state roads in Beaufort that are affected by flooding.

"Of the 36, vehicles can only drive through 24 roads and another two roads that are passable only to heavy vehicles while the rest are submerged and impassable," she said.

Meanwhile, Amrullah said the department has started its operations room to receive reports on roads that are damaged by floods and landslides as well as impassable roads in Sabah.

"Our 23 district engineers in the State will provide the department with their reports on those affected roads for immediate action.

"So far, only those roads in Kimanis, Beaufort, Membakut, and Sipitang are in need of quick attention," he said, adding the reports would be submitted to the ministry to be scrutinised.
