RM5m yearly aid for 3,000 students from Eco World

Kota Kinabalu: An annual budget of about RM5 million will be allocated for the Student Aid Programme (SAP) under the Eco World Foundation, said its Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.He said the money would be used to sponsor 3,000 primary and secondary students selected under the programme.

"The programme is aimed at helping students to achieve their full academic potential and improve their living standards.

"The holistic approach of the SAP addresses every aspect of a primary student's educational requirements, from equipping him or her for the new school year and arranging meals in school to paying school and tuition fees," he said.

Lee was speaking at the UPSR Excellence Award ceremony held at the Le Meredian Hotel, here, Saturday.

He said primary students who achieved good results in the UPSR examination are also eligible to apply for the SAP at the secondary level and subsequently at the higher education level.

The foundation, Lee said, would also conduct home visits for the selected students to check on their home life and give moral support to their parents.

Last year, they visited the homes of about 180 students here, with the help of volunteers and teachers, he said.

According to him, the Eco World Foundation was launched on Sept 24, 2014 under the auspices of Eco World Development Group Berhad to serve as a platform for the group to fulfil its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

During the event, 25 students under the SAP and teachers from different schools here received their awards.

The six schools were SK Tanjung Aru 1, SK Kepayan, SRK Stella Maris, SRK Sacred Heart, SJK (C) Chung Hwa and SJK (C) Yick Nam. Three students were rewarded for obtaining straight As in their UPSR examination, two received an award for their outstanding results, while the rest received the most improved award.

Each student received a Malay-English dictionary and Adam Khoo's motivational book and cash prizes of RM200, RM150 and RM100, respectively.

Also present at the event were the group Chief Operating Officer Dato' S. Rajoo and Eco World Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Dato' Liew Siong Sing.
