Kuala Lumpur: The flickering red-themed traditional lanterns and calligraphic decorations at shopping complexes, commercial premises and main roads here are signs that the Chinese New Year is around the corner.Numerous discounts, offers and attractive prices are offered during the period, especially by shopping complexes, traditional clothing boutiques and decoration shops to lure the Chinese community into preparing for the Year of the Goat, on Feb 19.

In the merriment of the cheap prices and fantastic discount offers, consumers should be prudent when spending to avoid being burdened with financial problems later.

Universiti Putra Malaysia Human Ecology, Family and Consumer Economics Faculty associate professor Dr Sarifah Azizah Haron said a person should spend based on needs.

"Save for several months prior to the festival. Then draw up a list of the items to buy, depending on priority and quantity deemed appropriate," she said.

Calligraphist Tong Yong, 52, said his family will make a list of the items before spending to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

"According to tradition, all old items have to be replaced but we will not do so if an item is still in working or mint condition," he said.

Meanwhile, a visit to Jalan Petaling here found the Chinese community had already started shopping since early this month.

Nan Thong Gift & Decors Sdn Bhd shop manager in Jalan Petaling, Saw Chong Giap, 46, said Chinese New Year decorative items sold at his shop since the end of December received encouraging response despite a slight hike in prices.

"But some clients want the decorative items to be reasonably priced. Normally, I will make recommendations depending on their need and affordability," he added. – Bernama
