Support for IS: UiTM student charged

Selangor: A student at the Perlis campus of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) was charged in the Sessions Court here Monday with attempting to give support to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group. Wan Mohammad Arif Wan Rokman, 23, a marine engineering student, was alleged to have committed the offence at Gate C15 of the departure hall of the KL International Airport here at 10.15 pm on Dec 28. He was to have taken a Turkish Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul with the intention of becoming a member of IS. Wan Mohammad Arif was also faces an alternative charge of attempting to support the IS group by intending to enter Syria through Istanbul on the same date, time and place. – Bernama

The student, who was not represented by counsel, nodded after the charges were read out to him before Judge Aizatul Akmal Maharani. No plea was recorded and the judge set March 30 for mention of the case. Wan Mohammad Arif was charged under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code. Upon conviction, he can be sentenced to imprisonment for life or up to 30 years, or fined, and shall also be liable to forfeiture of any property used or intended to be used in connection with the commission of the offence.
