Alor Setar: China's decelerating growth may be a hard landing for exporters, but trade will continue to grow with hard work, says Minister of International Trade and Industry (Miti), Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed. He said China, the foremost trade partner for 120 countries in the world, grew by 7.4 per cent last year, and is very competitive to all exporters vying to gain a market share in that country.

"As we work hard to promote our exports, many others will come up with their own initiatives to gain from the Chinese market.

"As such, we hope our people will be more aggressive and continue to do well in the big China market," he added.

Mustapa also expressed the view that Malaysia can overcome the turbulence in the global economy as it is more diversified, with China making up only 13 per cent of exports, while having other export partners as Northeast Asia, the US, Japan, South Korea and the European Union.

Speaking to reporters at the launch of the "My Asean Internship" programme here Monday, he said Asean had also become a very important trade partner for Malaysia at between 26 to 27 per cent of total trade within the region.

The My Asean Internship Programme, a collaboration programme between Miti and Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp), is aimed at increasing overall awareness on Asean among Malaysian youth.

It will place 100 high achieving students from Malaysian universities as interns in local companies. Asean youth studying in Malaysian universities can also intern in the country.

Mustapa said, the programme offers an unique opportunity for youth to be exposed to Asean as a market and develop a clear understanding of regional opportunities and the benefits that comes from regional economic integration.

Meanwhile, TalentCorp's Chief Executive Officer Johan Mahmood Merican said, Asean integration, in the form of the Asean Economic Community, is set to have a far-reaching and long lasting impact on the future of Malaysian companies and the career of employees.

He said, for a start, there are 12 pioneer employers participating in the My Asean Internship Programme, including, AirAsia, Axiata, BDO, CIMB, Digi, GE, Maybank, Nestle, Securities Commission Malaysia, Sime Darby, Sunway and ZICOLaw, while many more had shown an interest in participating.

Applications for the programme, he added, would be open from Feb 10, 2015 for all final year students in public and private Malaysian Universities for the July intake this year.

According to Johan, participating students would be provided with allowances and boarding expenses by the companies concerned and as the programme was also focused on inclusively, even the poorer students can apply, as their basic expenses would be taken care of.
