Kota Kinabalu: Hope is not lost to lure back Chinese tourists to Sabah as assured by Wuhan County Vice Mayor, Zhang Xuemang.Zhang, who is leading an eight-member delegation on a three-day working visit here, told this to Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir during a courtesy call in City Hall, Monday.

Giving Madingkir his assurance, the Vice Mayor said his delegation will go back to Wuhan and introduce Kota Kinabalu, describing it as a beautiful city with friendly people, to his people and encourage them to come here.

"When we go back to our city, we will tell our citizens that Sabah people are friendly and ask them to come to Sabah, to travel and buy your houses," he said, among others.

Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province in Central China, has a population of more than 10 million people, with more citizens travelling abroad every year.

The city is also recognised as the political, economic, financial, cultural, educational and transportation hub center of central China, with dozens of railways including bullet trains, roads and expressways passing through the city.

Confident of bringing in Chinese tourists here, Zhang proposed that a direct flight be introduced between Wuhan and Kota Kinabalu.

According to Zhang, Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is one of the busiest airports in China and the country's fourth international hub airport after Beijing International Airport, Shanghai's Pudong Airport and Guangzhou's Baiyun Airport.

He said with the direct flights between both cities, this would definitely encourage more tourists from China to visit Sabah.

On the purpose of the courtesy call and meeting with Madingkir, Zhang said it is to open talks with a view to establish a "Sister City' between Wuhan and Kota Kinabalu. He also extended an invitation letter to Madingkir to visit Wuhan and formalise the friendship establishment between both cities.

Thanking them for the visit, Madingkir said that as a young city, Kota Kinabalu will benefit from Wuhan, which is an advanced city.

He gave his full support to the proposals brought up by Zhang and told the Vice Mayor to write to him officially to enable him to pursue the matters to the higher authorities.

Also present during the courtesy call were Institute Development Sabah (IDS) Chairman and Honorary Consul of Romania for Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Clarence B. Malakun, who is also instrumental in introducing the group to Sabah, and United Sabah Sze Yip Association President, Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen, who acted as the translator for the Wuhan delegation.
