Kota Kinabalu: Boxing and muaythai fans and enthusiasts will have three days of fighting galore at the Likas Sports Complex with 170 fighters including 28 boxing professional all itching to get into the ring for the D1 Fighting Championship.Dubbed as "The Rise of Rhino Warriors", the fights will commence from Jan 30 until Feb 1 starting 8am daily for the amateurs.

The professional fighters will only get their opportunity starting 7.30pm.

Organiser Dinhar Group said this during a courtesy call on Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan on Tuesday at the latter's office.

Ir Nazri Ab Razak said two-thirds of the fighters comprised Sabahans while the rest are from other states in the country including Sukma athletes from Sarawak.

"There will be also 28 world-class boxers from Thailand, Uzbekistan, Indonesia and Singapore," he said.

He said the fights would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans in Sabah, who mostly only heard of such fights being held outside of the State.

While entry is free, Nazri said Dinhar Group is also hoping to turn the sport as a tourism product with the participation of boxers from the international scene.

"At the same time, we hope to provide the opportunity for local entrepreneurs to form business network," he said.

He said the most important is to develop the sport of muaythai or thai boxing in Sabah and also to unearth backup athletes for the Sukma in Kuching next year.

Local muaythai boxers, he said, would have the opportunity to gain exposure from watching international exponents in actual sports combat.

"They can see from close range the skills and techniques that other combatants employ and deploy during the fights.

"This is important and from thereon, local boxers could improve their skills and also confidence," he said.

Nazri said that it is Dinhar Group's aim also to introduce the D1 Fighting Championship at the international scene.

Eight-time muaythai world champion, Bow Suweilek, currently coach to Dinhar Muay Gym, Permanent Secretary Datuk Suzannah Liaw and Director of State Sports Council, Terrance Edward Pudin, were also present during the courtesy call.
