Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has allocated RM200,000 to undertake the 'Nurturing Young Researchers' project as part of efforts to make research a culture among its undergraduates. Its vice chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Ibrahim Komoo said 125 first and second year students are involved in the study.

"This programme has started since last Dec and through this project we undertake transformation by involving these students in teamwork.

"Normally in any institutions of higher learning, only final year students conduct research but this time UMT has made some changes as we want to expose them to conduct studies that are focused," he told reporters after presenting the 2015 vice chancellor annual lecture at Dewan Tuanku Mizan here Wednesday.

He said UMT also hoped that through such studies, its students would give benefits to local communities.

"We hope that within the nine-month duration of the study, the students will be able to make a positive impact on the local community by making them aware that UMT researches are orientated towards marine science application," he said.

Ibrahim said this year, UMT would also launch another research project, namely 'Kenyir Geopark Development: Heritage, Sustainability and Community Livelihood' the outcome of a collaboration with the Terengganu state government.

He said the research was aimed at conducting studies and enhance Tasik Kenyir geotourism as a national geopark to become a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) global geopark.

"We will provide an incentive funding of RM250,000 to any lecturer interested to conduct this study," he said. – Bernama
