Kuala Lumpur: The implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on Apr 1 will not affect Coca-Cola sales in Malaysia, said Coca-Cola Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei region general manager, Gill McLaren. "No, I don't think the GST will affect our sales and we are prepared for its implementation. The tax system has been adopted by many countries and Malaysia is just following suit," she told reporters after the launch of the new beverage, Coca-Cola zero, here Wednesday.

McLaren said Malaysia was now the 150th country to offer Coca-Cola zero, one of the most successful innovations from the company in the past 25 years, with the brand now worth US$7 billion.

She said the company was optimistic the product would receive positive response here as a market research was conducted earlier. – Bernama

"Coca-Cola zero, introduced in other countries since 2005, contains no sugar or calories.

"In a recent market research, Malaysian consumers were initially sceptical when they were told that Coca-Cola zero had no sugar but after sampling the new product, they were surprised that it tasted similar to the original Coca-Cola.

"I believe the new drink will have a broader appeal," she said, adding that the company had earlier introduced Coke Light, which was targeted at the female and expatriate consumers. – Bernama
