Negeri Sembilan: The police are monitoring the activities of the militant group known as Islamic State in Negeri Sembilan including in local institutes of higher learning. Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Jaafar Mohd Yusof said the 24-hour monitoring was being done around the clock to deal with IS activities."We have officers who have been assigned to monitor them in tertiary institutes. We are also talking to lecturers to find out if there is IS activity in their place. However, so far, there are no signs in that direction," he told reporters after a ceremony to hand over 17 Amanita scooters, 18 multi-purpose patrol cars and eight Nissan Navara vehicles to the Negeri Sembilan Police Contingent, here Thursday.

Also present were the head of the State Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department, ACP Che Man Md Dros and Seremban District Police Chief ACP Muhamad Zaki Harun.

Jaafar said the State police were investigating a man suspected of being involved with the group. He said the man was detained in October last year when his movements were found to be suspicious.

"... however, so far, this matter is negative. When we find that he is not involved in this activity, we will release him. So far, we do not see him participating in the group. We are still investigating who is behind him, why he is here and so far, we do not see his involvement. Hopefully, he is not involved with the IS," he said. – Bernama

Jaafar said police would make a statement soon whether the man was involved with the IS.

On the new vehicles handed over to the department, Jaafar said they would be used in crime prevention patrols for the safety of the local community.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, the police continue to monitor the public's activities to ensure they are not influenced by negative elements, which includes joining militant groups abroad.

Terengganu Police Chief Datuk Jamshah Mustapa said they also monitored the deviant teachings of Syiah as well as connections to the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

He said they have not detected any such activities and elements supporting IS militants in Terengganu, but their surveillance will be ongoing.

"We will work with Bukit Aman on this, but so far we do not see any militant activities going on in the State," he told reporters here.

Previously, a former Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Arau student was charged in the Sessions Court for supporting the IS militant group last year.

Wan Mohammad Arif Wan Rokman, 23, from Setiu, Terengganu had allegedly committed the offence at 10.15pm on Dec 28, 2014, in front of entrance C15 at the KL International Airport (KLIA) where he was about to depart for Istanbul, Turkey on Turkish Airlines. – Bernama
