Kuala Lumpur: The government has called on consumers to play a role in helping stabilise the national economy by supporting the products of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong said this could be one way to help the country during this period of uncertainty, and on top of all the measures being taken by the government.

Speaking to reporters after officiating the Malaysian Business Student Summit 2015 at University of Malaya here today, he said as Malaysia strives to be the global halal hub, it would benefit producers of halal products.

"Apart from local consumption, the products can be exported as well," he added.

Meanwhile, Chua said that by reducing visa fees - especially for those from China -, more people would be attracted to making Malaysia their vacation destination.

"Malaysia is not the first country to have implemented this as other Asean members have already minimised their visa fees," he added.

On initiatives being introduced by the government to further increase revenue, Chua said additional income would be obtained from the Goods and Services Tax from April 1, with the number of registrations now at more than 300,000.

The additional GST revenue will enable the government to cushion the impact of the RM5.5 billion reduction in its operating expenditure under Budget 2015 due to lower crude oil prices.

"We are very confident of reducing the fiscal deficit and definitely have additional measures to achieve this goal," Chua said. –Bernama
