Kota Kinabalu: City Hall will adopt the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to keep abreast with latest technology in building design.Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said the BIM method is needed in order to keep pace with the rapid development in the city.

"As the catalyst for the use of BIM, City Hall will hold a discussion to draft a strategy to enhance efficiency on this latest trend in the development sector, in line with the latest innovation and development," he said at a briefing on early methods of BIM, here, Friday.

The briefing was attended by 25 agencies under the Local Government and Housing Ministry, district offices throughout Sabah, Public Works Department, Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Shareda) and others.

"The briefing is to expose the participants on BIM's technology…BIM is used to show the building's life span which includes the building processes and operation facilities.

"BIM will be using the 3D software, real-time and dynamic building models to increase productivity in the building's construction," he said, adding that the production process includes the building's geometry, space relations, geography information as well as the quantity and quality of the building's component.

Madingkir also said that a forum would be open to all participants in order to get their response to improve the implementation of BIM. Two speakers were invited to the briefing, namely BIM's Vendor of E-Construct Shariffudin Umar as well as Senior BIM Manager, Paul Millward.

Millward, who is from the United Kingdom, has 30 years' experience in structural engineering and has worked all over the world. He is currently a consultant on BIM and based in Kuala Lumpur.
