Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan on Friday issued a tall order to the swimming fraternity to produce world-class swimmers. He said Sabah has many talented athletes in swimming."But we want to see more Elvin Chias and Lim Keng Liats from this state," he said at the 48th Sabah Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship at the Kota Kinabalu Acquatics Complex.

Former international swimmers Elvin Chia and Lim Keng Liat, both from Sabah, were the nation's best in swimming in their time.

Both won numerous medals at the international stage and took part in world-class swimming competitions including the Olympics.

Tawfiq said he firmly believe that the swimming authorities in Sabah could achieve the goal if all the swimming clubs and organisations pool the efforts and hone the present talents to a higher level.

"So, stay together with us (Ministry) and help Sabah achieve this vision of producing world class athletes in swimming," he urged.

At the same time, he said it is his hope that swimming would contribute significantly to the 40-gold medal target that Sabah has set in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Kuching, Sarawak, next year.

To this, he said, the age group swimming competition is important as an avenue to produce potential athletes not only for national but also international levels.

He said the ministry would provide the necessary support. The age group swimming competition attracted more than 250 swimmers from all over Sabah including from Perak and Labuan.

Also present were Chairman of Sabah Sports Board (SSB), Datuk Louis Rampas, SSB General Manager, Penyuki Matta and Director of State Sports Council, Terrance Pudin.
