Kota Kinabalu: A study is now being carried out by a steering committee to look into the potentials of biomass in Sabah. The committee was reported to have met for the first time on Friday, and are expected to conclude the Biomass Industrial Development Plan within five months.

It is chaired by Industrial Development Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Hashim Paijian and the members comprise officials from the State Economic Planning Unit, Infrastructure Development Ministry, Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, Finance Ministry, Forestry Department, Industrial and Research Department (DIR) and POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd.

They are also expected to look into the potentials of biomass and its impacts on the economy, social and environment.

The effort is being taken in collaboration with Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM), an agency under the Prime Minister's Department tasked to execute the national Biomass strategy, it said.

It also involved an appointed international-based firm as the project's consultant and engineering expertise and without naming the firm, the statement added it has a global presence and the skill-sets to provide "strategic advise and engineering services" towards its implementation.

The study came as part of AIM's initiative under the National Biomass strategy which the government expect to yield RM30 billion in additional revenue for the country.

The strategy also aims to generate 60,000 new jobs in the related field and 12 per cent reduction in carbon emissions through bio-energy and bio-chemical.

The National Biomass Strategy was launched in 2011 and has identified several areas to develop the biomass sector, including Sabah due its density of mills and total planted areas under oil palm.
