Scholarships for Japanese studies and teacher training now open

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysians who wish to pursue the field of Japanese studies and teacher training in the country are encouraged to apply for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarships, which are now open until Feb 27.According to the statement by the Japanese Embassy here Friday, each scholarship student who qualifies for the Japanese study programme would receive a monthly allowance of around 117,000 yen (RM3,500), while for the teacher training course it would be around 143,000 yen (RM4,300).

Those who are selected will also enjoy various other facilities such as an exemption from paying the examination fee to enter the university, matriculation and tuition fees at the university, as well as return flight tickets.

Applicants for Japanese studies must be aged between 18 and 29 as of April 1 2015, which means those who were born between April 2 1985 and April 1 1997 are eligible, and they should currently be a second or third year student specialising in Japanese Language or Japanese Culture in a local university here.

Meanwhile, scholarships for an eighteen-month teacher's course is open to all university or teacher training institution graduates with a minimum of five years teaching experience in primary or secondary schools, or as an academic staff of any teacher-training institution.

"The applicant must be aged below 35 years as of April 1 2015 which means those who were born after April 2 1980, and should possess good command of English as well as the capability to learn Japanese," the statement said.

The applications for Japanese studies should be made at the embassy and applicants could visit http://www.my.emb-japan.go.jp/English/JIS/education/scholarship/scholarship.htm or call 03-2177 2600 on extensions 157 or 146 for further information.

For the teacher-training programme, applications should be made through the Public Service Department of Malaysia, and those interested could visit it's website at http://www.jpa.gov.my or contact Siti Norraifana Hamidon at 03-8885 3518 or [email protected] or Nurhafizah Sidek at 03-8885 3462 or [email protected] for further information.

The embassy will contact those applicants who fulfil the criteria via email or post for interviews, which will be held in mid-March. – Bernama
