Due recognition for the UEC?
Penampang: Parti Gerakan is hoping against hope that a memorandum it handed to the government will get Putrajaya going on recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) this year. Gerakan President Datuk Mah Siew Keong on Tuesday said the memorandum was made due to the growing concern of the Chinese community and consulting other Gerakan members who also hoped the UEC would receive its 'rightful' recognition.

"We have submitted a memorandum to the government that includes our ideas and suggestions.

"We hope there would be some positive advancement on the problem this year," he said, doubtful however the UEC would receive the recognition anytime soon.

As reported in most Chinese media, a leadership crisis is currently ongoing between members of the umbrella body that oversees all Chinese independent schools, Dong Zong, which Mah said is slowing down efforts.

"I hope this year they would be able to settle their problems amicably as bringing it to court will further split the Dong Zong (members)," he said.

Mah who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said, this to reporters after an hour-long meet-and-greet session with local hawkers here in Lido, here.

Calls from the Chinese Community for Putrajaya to recognise the UEC began many years ago but was reignited two weeks ago with Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem requesting Putrajaya to recognise UEC for the state first.

Towards this end, Mah had said the recognition should come about simultaneously nationwide.

The United Chinese School Committees' Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) had put forward appeals to the Federal government regarding this matter for years since Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was still Prime Minister.

Students of Chinese independent schools in Malaysia obtain the UEC after a six-year study period and getting the recognition would among others allow UEC graduates to enrol into local universities.
