Kuala Lumpur: Two weeks after Sabahan trio Zero won the coveted title of Maharaja Lawak 2014, another Sabahan stole the headlines again when he was crowned the champion of the TV3's talent search, the Mentor Legend on Sunday night. It was almost like a fairy tale for homeboy Azmil Karim, who ran away from his family home in Tawau when he was only a schoolboy a few years ago.

Azmil, 22, won it together with his mentor Dayang Nurfaizah and both of them took home a Proton Iriz 1.6 Premium CVT each, cash prize worth RM300,000 and a trophy.

Not bad for a young man who left home because of poverty not so long ago.

"I want to thank God for making this possible. Thank you to TV3, Mentor Legend, my parents and my supporters," Azmil said upon winning.

The dynamic duo received a total of 86 points while the first runner up Aina and her mentor Ella received 68 points and the second runner up Sarah and her mentor Amy Search only managed to garner 61 points.

In the gruelling 13-week competition, Azmil had always been the favourite among the six protégés competing for the top spot, triggering conspiracy theorists to speculate that his winning had been planned by TV3 from the beginning.

"That is not true at all. My win was not pre-arranged at all. Those were mere speculations from those who do not know the reality of the situation," he said.

What was more satisfying for Azmil is that all the judges reserved the highest praises for him.

Azmil also brushed off suggestions that he might struggle living up to expectations outside the competition especially since past winners continued to be overshadowed by their mentors' popularity.

"Whatever it is, I would have to depend on my own efforts. To say that I will be overshadowed, Dayang herself is a humble person and have encouraged me to continue my career as a singer," he said.

One thing for sure though, the night he won was overshadowed by some worrying news from home that his mother is sick because of old age.

But that did not stop the ambitious youngster from rocking on.

"With this money, of course I will use it for my parents and my family. After all, that was the main reason why I entered this competition. To change my family's fortune," he said.

The professional jury comprised music producer Azmeer and director Adlin Aman Ramli. Indonesian singer Chakra Khan was the special guest judge.

Azmil, Aina and Sarah are part of the six protégés chosen for the show. The other mentors were singers Zainal Abidin and Mas Idayu and composer Ajai.
