Labuan: The sanitary practices of eateries on this island are improving, with an increase of 63 eateries rated Grade A last year compared to 57 in 2013.The Health Department of Labuan Corporation (LC) inspected at least 170 eateries through its restaurant grading exercise last year to monitor compliance with the food handling and safety regulations.

The corporation's Chief Executive Officer Datuk Nadzri Othman said the restaurant grading system would help food operators to continue observing a high standard of food handling.

He said the A, B or C grade reflected the rating on things like cleanliness, food safety and other requirements laid out by the local authority.

"The grading system will help customers make choices on which restaurants to frequent.

"Restaurant operators can end up being penalised for issues or lack of compliance in areas such as food handling, food temperature and personal hygiene," he said at the presentation on the Food Premises Cleanliness Grading System, here, Wednesday.

Nadzri said 100 eateries were rated Grade B compared to 98 in 2013, and seven rated Grade C.

"The overall cleanliness in many restaurants here is at par with that in other major towns. We can see the commitment of operators in ensuring their premises are clean and well-organised. It is at a satisfactory level.

"We have introduced the 5S Kitchen Concept and Labuan Standard as part of the criteria in the grading system," he said.

Nadzri said LC would continue to monitor cleanliness at all food premises. "This is not to penalise but to educate them in improving the level of hygiene and sanitary practices," he added.
