Tremors felt in 6 districts
Sandakan: A total of six districts in the East Coast were hit by weak tremors for several seconds on Wednesday but no damages were reported. This followed an undersea earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale at about 9.31am near the Sulu Sea, some 247 kilometres from Isabela City in the Philippines. The tremors were felt in Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau.

In Tawau, staff at the Federal House, especially those on the top floors, had to evacuate the building after they felt the minor tremors for about 30 seconds.

According to a staff on the seventh floor of the building, they rushed to the ground floor and waited until the situation was calm before returning to duty.

Staff on the third and second floors, however, were not aware of the tremors, claiming that they did not feel anything and that everything went on as usual.

Tawau Fire and Rescue Department Chief Ahmad Razali Awang said they did not receive any distress call after the incident.

In Sandakan, those on the third and fourth floors of Wisma Majlis Perbandaran Sandakan also rushed to the ground floor after feeling the tremors at about 9.30am.

Sandakan Municipal Council Deputy President Mohd Hamsan Awang Supain said the tremors occurred when they were having a meeting on the first floor of the building, prompting them to stop the meeting before resuming after everything was confirmed to be safe by personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department who inspected the building.

Also at the site were personnel from the Civil Defence Department.
