Papar: The health office here is going all out to book owners and operators of eateries contravening the Food Act 1983.Its Second District Health Officer Dr. Shameer Khan said this is being conducted regularly to enhance awareness among those owners and operators to comply with the provisions of the Act.

This is because, he said, the cleanliness and hygiene level in these food premises here are not up to standard and could affect public health.

"Such moves include organising a large scale integrated operation with the enforcement unit of Papar District Council so that all personnel can inspect the premises simultaneously.

"By doing so, operators of the premises would not have a reason to suddenly close their shops upon seeing other eateries being inspected for cleanliness," he said.

Dr. Shameer said this to Daily Express during its integrated operation known as Ops Bersih at the township here, recently.

He headed the operation which involved 40 officers and personnel from the health office and four enforcement officers from the District Council here.

"We will be conducting this large scale integrated operation every month to ensure cleanliness level at all eateries and restaurants including food stalls is good and complies with all procedures and provisions in the Act.

Dr. Shameer said they can issue compounds on the spot with a maximum compound of RM5,000 for each offence.

For eateries or restaurants found to be unclean, he said the health office can issue an order for the premises to be closed for 14 days and would be re-inspected before allowing them to operate again.

In a recent integrated operation on Feb 16, he said 13 premises were inspected by 44 health personnel including four enforcement personnel from the District Council from 9am to 12pm.

Of the 13 premises, he said two restaurants were ordered to close for two weeks.

In addition, he said 21 compounds were issued to operators of eateries for failing to ensure their workers get the typhoid vaccination and failing to ensure the workers wear aprons and cover their hair with caps or headscarves.
