Sandakan: The 14th edition of Borneo Sevens starts today (Friday) at Bandar Utama IJM here, where 32 teams from 12 nations, including four Malaysian teams are taking part. With over US$40,000 (RM144,000) up for grabs, Malaysia and top national teams from Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, China, Tonga, Singapore, Japan, Papua New Guinea and Samoa are sending their best male and female players to challenge for the Asia Pacific Cross Regional Sevens.

While in the International Clubs Sevens, Daveta of Fiji will be defending their 2013 crown against host, Borneo Eagles and Sabah Eagles, together with several top ranked clubs.

After finishing second to Daveta in 2013, Borneo Eagles head coach, Edwin Cocker wanted to end the jinx at home after gaining success away from home in recent tournaments.

"Playing as host can add a little pressure to the boys due to the home crowd but it won't interrupt our goal of reaching the final and win.

"As the host, we will do the best for the club as they have been working hard behind the scene and hopefully we can get some awards as well as reach the final," he said.

The former All Blacks Sevens made a number of changes to the squad that won the Singapore Cricket Club Sevens last year due to personal duties.

"However, this is an opportunity for the new members, especially our experienced boys from Fiji and New Zealand with the likes of Luke Masirewa, Jona Tuitoga, Pio Tuwai and Sainivalati Ramuwai coming in to add some flair and strength to the team," its coach said.

ERC Borneo Eagles will start their tournament against DBKL while ERC Sabah Eagles will open against Labuan Marlin.

The entrance is free for the three-day tournament which will end on Sunday.
