Kota Kinabalu: Government departments and companies in the State have been advised to consider implementing the lean management system in their organisation.Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC) State Director Norzirin Ariffin said applying the system would increase efficiency in meeting customer satisfaction and at the same time reduce waste.

"This approach focuses on eliminating waste and improving the everyday production of the company. It also utilises the available resources competently at a minimum cost," she said at the Lean Management with Industry Seminar at Hotel Taha D'Bayu, here, Thursday.

She said MPC has been introducing lean management since 2011 to various organisations and that since 2014, MPC has held 40 seminars involving 1,587 participants from 376 organisations.

"These organisations were given exposure and awareness about lean management and its significance.

We also had four overseas study missions to neighbouring countries and five lean hands-on workshops in various companies within the country."

Lean management is an approach by which an organisation would focus on steady elimination of waste. As waste is eliminated, quality would improve and production cost and time will also reduce.

In this system, there are eight types of wastes among them being motion, inventory, waiting and defects.

Meanwhile, MPC BoD member Datuk Awang Buhtamam Ag Mahmun said this is an innovative approach to managing an organisation with tight budgets.

"This efficient waste management system also increases organisations' productivity and performance.

"It was derived mostly from a method used by Toyota called Toyota Production System (TPS). This application of a controlled culture made Toyota more competitive and advanced compared to other car manufacturing companies."

He also said organisations need to be bold in finding new ideas and should not be too comfortable in their positions.

"If we are too comfortable, we would be soon be outdated. We need to constantly think out of the box in order to make changes and improve.

"This is essentially crucial in the economic environment which is very competitive, unpredictable and influenced by many different factors."
