Labuan: The authority has approved the lease of the Kampung Sungei Keling market, which is under the Labuan Corporation (LC), for a certain term as was promised by the former Federal Territories Minister Dato Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.LC Chairman Datuk Rozman Isli announced this "good news" at the closing ceremony of the 10-day Chinese New Year carnival, organised by the Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce, at the market compound. "A letter to this effect is on the way to the chamber," said Rozman to the applause of the crowd.

"Since the Minister (Raja Nong) had promised such to the chamber to prevent the market from lying idle, the action of the officers will have to be consistent with the decision of the Minister," he added.

He noted that the market had been put to good use by the Chamber and the JKKK (Village and Security Development Committee) of Sungei Keling over the past year by holding various events at the market and helping to draw crowds.

"This had enlivened the environment and created opportunities for stall businesses."

Rozman congratulated LCCC Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii for helping to rejuvenate the almost abandoned market and having a plan now to further invest in the facility and improve conditions in the market. The market built at a cost of RM1 million was intended as the new market site for pork sellers.

LC wanted to relocate the pork sellers from the crowded central market in town so that they could expand and operate their business in a better environment.

However, when the market was ready, sitting on a prime 2.4-acre industrial land next to the highway, the pork sellers refused to co-operate and shift out, giving various excuses such as the new market was way out.

They even preferred to sell their pork under a tree at an open compound near the Jati Commercial Complex, as a sign of protest.

This prompted LC to open up another area in the central market exclusively for their use and the pork sellers have been using the place until today.

Wong had been making persistent pleas for the market as was promised by the Chamber. Presently, the Sungei Keling market is under two-year sub-lease to Sg Keling JKKK given by LC.
