Kota Kinabalu: The government must help find placement for industrial training for foreign students who are pursuing degree programmes at the Universiti Sabah Malaysia-Labuan International Campus (UMS-KAL).Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (LCCC) President Datuk Wong Kii Yii made the call when accompanying Consul-General of China Chen Peijie's first visit to the campus.

Some 100 over students from mainland China are studying at UMS-KAL. They raised the issue of looking for industrial attachment.

It is mandatory for them to gain industrial exposure before their convocation.

"Being foreign students, they are not given preference by companies. As such, the onus is on the government and authorities to facilitate them for temporary attachment, otherwise it defeats the purpose of attracting foreign students to our institution of higher learning," Wong said.

In remarks to Daily Express, the Consul-General was proud that the students were disciplined, diligent and serious in their studies.

"I was told by the university officials that China students are doing well. I also appreciate what the campus is doing to help our students in language and adapting to life in Labuan," Chen said.

This was her maiden visit to Labuan and was impressed with the opportunities available.

"My role as the diplomat based in Sabah is to achieve a win-win relationship between Malaysia and China. As far as Labuan is concerned, we want our investors from China to partner in its development.

"After meeting Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Datuk Isli, I can see what Labuan has to offer in terms of its duty-free status, O&G hub and International Business and Financial Centre (IBFC). It has great potential as a maritime base," she said.

Later in the evening, she attended the LCCC Chinese New Year Open House, together with FT Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor and other dignitaries.
