Kota Belud: Flood victims who receive flood relief aid from the Government are from this year required to sign an oath with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to prove they are genuine claimants. Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said they would be bound by the law in doing so.

This is among improvements done by the Government to ensure the assistance which is specially allocated for flood victims reaches those who are genuinely in need.

According to Abdul Rahman, the assistance of RM500 is not compensation for damages caused by floods but assistance given by the Government which is concerned about the people's plight.

His speech was read by Agriculture and Food Industry Assistant Minister Datuk Musbah Jamli during the flood assistance aid ceremony held at the Dewan Tun Said here, where he handed over assistance to some 286 heads of families from 17 villages.

The district was hit by flash floods three times from Oct 7 until Oct 10 last year and again on Jan 2 until Jan 4 this year.

Meanwhile, National Security Council Sabah Secretary Rodzi Md. Saad said the assistance was the first of its kind in the State.

"The aid with an allocation of RM1,059,000 will be handed out in stages to a total of 2,118 family heads who were evacuated to flood relief centres in Sabah.

"The Government has allocated more than RM300 million for the RM500 flood aid, not including other operational costs nationwide," he said.
