Kota Kinabalu: Beauty pageant winners play a big part in society as they act as ambassadors to convey and spread positives messages and advice besides endorsing products.Umno Kota Kinabalu Vice-Chief Datuk Fatimah Shara Ahmad Noor said beauty contests as such are not all about being pretty and looking good physically, but about the confidence of the contestants and their ability to portray a positive look and attitude.

She said models who take part in such competition would be able to put any message across to get the public's attention.

"Some winners of beauty pageants won the crowns and titles not because of their physical beauty but due to confidence and intelligence that they showed to the jurors and audience.

"With confidence, they can build their leadership skills including public speaking competency," she said at the grand finale of Mr. and Miss Culture of Asia here on Thursday.

A total of nine women and five men from Asean countries - Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and India, took part in the pageant since Wednesday.

Also present was Persatuan Momogun Rungus Sabah (Samora) President Datuk Jelani Hamdan.

Fatimah said beautiful women should not bank on their beauty alone as it could fade but should acquire living skills which could sustain their livelihood.

"Get the opportunity to learn more skills and embark on businesses or economic activities that can secure a future," she said.

Fatimah also crowned Mashor Awang Long, 23, from Malaysia and Arnepha Abdusalam, 23, from the Philippines as the Mr and Ms Culture of Asia 2015.

Meanwhile, Jelani said Samora will be looking for models who can wear Rungus traditional attire for public display during the launching of Pesta Magahau on June 1.

"The festivity has been recognised by the State government and will be put into the Sabah tourism calendar.

"This will be a first in the history of the Rungus community to show the tradition of the ethnic group to the public," said Jelani who is also Matunggong Assemblyman.
