Kota Kinabalu: Chinese New Year eve reunion dinners in the city's hotels recently have been getting mixed response from the public. For some hotels, the numbers have dropped slightly, other have remained the same, while others have experienced a slight increase.

However, the general view is that as a whole, business is not as brisk as before as the public await with trepidation the upcoming implementation of the Goods and Services Tax to be implemented from April 1.

Prices for the celebratory Yee Sang dish also saw a mixed response with some hotels reporting a slight increase while for others the price have remained the same.

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa General Manager Andrew den Oudsten said that the resort offered Chinese New Year reunion dinners at both Shang Palace Chinese Restaurant and Café Tatu this year.

"The number of bookings and spending was more or less similar to last year's. The trend was similar between both years. There has been no change or drop in the orders. The Yee Sang dish is already included in our three reunion dinner set menus. Ala carte we were offering our Yee Sang from RM188++ to RM238++."

Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu, Marketing Communication Manager Jocelyn Banding said that their number of guests for the reunion dinners was also more or less the same as last year's.

"We typically offer a buffet spread at our hotel where we charge our guests RM118 each for the reunion dinner. The Yee Sang dish is already included in the price."

Ming Garden Hotel and Residence Marketing Communications Manager, Shauntay Dawn Chong said, however, they seemed to have noticed an increase in their number of Chinese New Year eve reunion dinner bookings this year.

"Last year, most of our diners were mostly a mix of foreigners i.e. overseas Chinese tourists and locals but this year's reunion dinner were mostly locals.

"We saw an increase of around six tables more. Most of the diners ordered the Yee Sang which was slightly more expensive this year with a RM20 increase. It's RM68 for a small dish and RM98 for a large one."

However a Marketing Communications Manager with a business hotel in the city who wished to remain anonymous said this year the number of bookings for Chinese New Year eve reunion dinners were slightly less than last year.

"There was a slight drop in bookings for the reunion dinners compared to last year. Most of the diners are locals. Our Yee Sang dish response from our diners was also the same as last years' and our prices have remained the same," she said.
