Rehab programme for prisoners effective, says Zahid

Selangor: The rehabilitation programme carried out for prison inmates in the country has proved effective with Malaysia making achievements in addressing cases of repeat offenders among the prisoners concerned.Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the rate of recidivism among prisoners in Malaysia last year was 7.6 per cent, compared with other countries in the region which recorded between 25 and 35 per cent.

"The latest approach is by emphasising rehabilitation aspects so that they do not repeat their crime and return to prison.

"Towards this end, we are in the process of getting the Finance Ministry's permission to set up a Correctional Foundation and the fund will be used by the foundation to further strengthen the rehabilitation programme," he told reporters after visiting the Kajang Prison Complex here Friday.

Ahmad Zahid said the Correctional Foundation would also serve as the trustee for funds obtained by the prison institution which could be used for rehabilitation of prisoners and to pay for their education fees.

He said there were currently 37 inmates at the Kajang prison pursuing their studies at the Open University Malaysia (OUM), with 16 of them taking a diploma course, bachelor's degree in business management (15) and master's degree (six people).

The opportunity for further studies, he said, would also be extended to inmates at the Correctional Centre in Puncak Alam, adding that this was possible with the cooperation of OUM and the Kuala Lumpur University. - Bernama
