Kota Kinabalu: SM Sains Sabah topped the 47th Kota Kinabalu MSSD Track and Field meet that ended on Sunday, a day that saw 14 district meet records smashed. With 24 gold, 22 silver and 15 bronze medals in the bag, the science stream academic institution was simply unrivalled.

In second place was SM Tshung Tshin with 16 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze medals.

SM Shan Tao came third with 7 gold, five silver and 10 bronze medals.

The Sportsmen and Sportswomen awards went to Dunston Maxmillan (SM Shan Tao) for Men Under-18, Lo Chi Wun (SM Tshung Tsin) for Women Under-18, Friedrick Jikmin (SM Sains Sabah) for Men Under-15 and Fazria Kung Ho (SM Sains Sabah) for Women Under-15.

A total of 1,128 students from 26 schools took part in the annual track and field meet. Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister, Datuk Kamarlin Ombi, said sports is among the best platforms to produce students who are physically and mentally active.

Officiating at the closing, he said that sports also inculcate the students to be obedient and indirectly become responsible, disciplined and possess good leadership skills.

To this, the 1Pupil 1Sport policy that was mooted by the government, he said, is aptly applied since it is geared towards achieving the goal.

Meanwhile, he said that the track and field meet is not just about producing champions and winners.

"The most important is that the sports meet provides indirect education to the students and athletes that success could only be attained through effort, diligence, meticulous planning and sacrifice," he said. He said there is no short cuts to success except through continuous struggles and efforts.

"This sports championship is also a platform towards unity, respect with one another and high spirit of cooperation," he said.

In addition, Kamarlin said that continuous participation in sports would hinder the students from unhealthy activities.

He said through sports, human capital with first class minds and quality are formed.

To this end, he said that sports could inculcate unity among the multi-racial community in the country.

He said that unity is key to the nation's success.

"So, the people should not forget the importance of unity, which is ingredient to Malaysia's success and harmony…and among the best indicators to attain it is through sports," he said.

He said it is therefore impertinent that the sports fraternity should be united in their quest to become champions irrespective of their ethnicity, and religion.
