Kota Kinabalu: DAP Sabah Secretary Dr Edwin Bosi clarified that he was not against the concept of the people's housing scheme."But it must be done with proper planning taking into consideration all the factors such as land status and the feeling of the people about the proposal," he said.

Bosi who is also the Assemblyman for Kapayan said he understood the position of the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (SHTDA) and is glad that it is able to generate income through joint‐venture development projects to sustain it adding that DAP Sabah has no issue with SHTDA's noble objective.

Bosi said he is only extremely unhappy when SHTDA undertakes activities that are detrimental to the people especially residents of housing estates.

"A good example is taking a "chunk" of open spaces meant for sports and recreation and converts it into commercial land in this case a 500 unit people housing scheme at Kapayan Ridge at the vicinity of Austral Park.

"Sabah after all has so much land for such purpose. The residents of Austral Park who bought the property around this "open space" have been shortchanged.

"I took up this case in the Sabah Assembly and was against the proposal after understanding the grouses and unhappiness of the residents of Austral Park only to be told by the Sekong Assemblyman that I was afraid my majority in the coming general election will be reduced.

"At least we now know that there is motive on the part of the government to resettle people into the 500 units who will vote for BN in the general election.

"The action of SHTDA and the government to build a 500- unit people's housing scheme on the above piece of land meant for sports and recreation shows that the government will do anything to satisfy its political objective.

"Can we then trust this government to take care of our interest?"

Bosi said the SHTDA did it again when it wanted to convert yet few open spaces lands at Kapayan Ridge to develop 36 units of semi detached houses and 22 units of detached houses.

"As reported by my colleague Likas Assemblyman Junz Wong, a RM17.6 million agreement was signed on December 8, 2009 between Rangkai Juta Construction Sdn Bhd and Magnum Setiajaya and that only after 21 days SHTDA signed a RM9.855 million contract with Rangkai Juta Construction.

"In these agreements between the three parties, there are elements of uncertainty which raise many doubts if they were done properly. I think the Land Office is a position to assist in this matter."

Bosi said he is taking the "advise" from SHTDA Chairman Rubin Balang seriously and to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) concerning this deal.

"I am extremely disappointed that the government which prides itself to be eco-friendly and people friendly and one that encourages her people to exercise and stay healthy is doing exactly the opposite. The government has taken away their "green lung, sports and recreation."

With the 500 units people's housing scheme and the construction of 58 units of semi and detached houses on land already earmarked as open spaces, sports and recreation the government may have run foul with the development by laws which it has enacted and professed to defend, he added.
