Upko to ensure teaching of K-Dusun in schools
Kota Belud: Upko will make every effort to ensure the teaching of KadazanDusun language in schools since 1999 will not be replaced by other subjects. Upko division chief cum Komulakan Chief Ewon Benedick said that making KadazanDusun language an elective subject in the national education system was one of the party's biggest contributions.

"It is very dear to Upko and therefore apart from ensuring the teaching of this subject stays, we will also continue to cooperate and require the Government to improvise and strengthen including providing more seats in university and teaching institute dedicated to prepare teachers on this subject and also on the publication of books in KadazandDusun," said Ewon.

"This in a way is a process of participation of the KadazanDusun community in nation building where all races have their own role and made to feel part of governing this country.

"At the same time, we also hope more KadazanDusun teachers will join in this effort and offer this subject in their school. This can be a basic platform to instil patriotism and nationalism among the KadazanDusun," he said when meeting with the KadazanDusun language teachers, here, Tuesday.

According to Ewon, Upko had also been supporting the KadazanDusun Language Foundation (KLF) to continue undertaking researches, academic programmes and publishing various types of books in KadazanDusun as extra material to be used in the teaching and learning of this language.

On another note, Ewon, who is the Political Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, said he was made to understand that three secondary schools, 37 primary schools and 78 teachers were involved in this year's district-level KadazanDusun language carnival.

"On behalf of Upko, I congratulate and appreciate all the teachers who share the same concern and commitment in this matter. In whatever capacity I have, I'm always with the teachers and parents in improving the teaching of KadazanDusun language in schools," he said.

"The Government has actually shown its concern in giving spaces to the KadazanDusun community in nation building.

"Apart from this subject that is being offered in schools and university, our judicial and Native Court institution is also being strengthened, among others, through the establishment of a Native Court Training Institute and also the recognition of Tadau Kaamatan as one of the six main celebrations of the country."

During the meeting, Ewon also presented his contribution of RM5,000 to kick off the KadazanDusun language carnival which will begin on April 30.
