Tawau: Electricity thieves' tactic of hiding illegal connections in a PVC pipe was foiled when the modus operandi was discovered by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) enforcement personnel here, Thursday. The enforcement team managed to find the cables hidden in the pipeline after the 'knocking' on the pipes which were covered by soil or long grass.

In addition, the cables attached by power thieves on the main electricity poles were cut by SESB using cranes and ladders.

The operation was attended by about 30 enforcement officers, with auxillary SESB police and Energy Commission which focused on the Mile 3 and Mile 4 Jalan Apas and Apas Parit industrial area.

An estimated 200kg illegally connected cables were confiscated by the team in the operation from 9am until 12pm.

Meanwhile, SESB, in a statement to the media, mentioned that over 20 squatter settlements in the area were active in making illegal connections.

The agency believed this contributed to the occurrence of frequent electrical interference in the surrounding areas.

"Operations carried out previously witnessed the seizure of various types of cable reaching 100kg whenever there is an operation," the statement said.
