Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia faced economic losses of up to RM9 billion from the 6,650 road deaths last year, according to Road Transport Department (RTD) Director-General Datuk Sri Ismail Ahmad (pic). He said research by the Malaysia Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) showed that losses of up to RM1.2 million is incurred for each road fatality.

"A total of 477,500 accidents which resulted in 7,000 deaths were recorded in 2013 compared to 480,000 accidents and 6,650 deaths last year.

"This figure shows that road accidents are not only among the leading causes of deaths in the country but also a burden in terms of economy," he said during the appointment of the State-level RTD Youth Squad1 Chief and Deputy Chief ceremony, here, Friday. The ceremony was also attended by the State RTD Director Mohd Shuhaili Mohd Taufek

"We usually take accidents for granted, thinking that it would never happen to us but we must be reminded that road accidents can happen to anyone regardless of race, age and religion.

"There is a long list of what road accidents can cause, it can cause loss of loved ones, permanent disfigurement, loss of earnings, a lifetime of suffering and regret," he said.

"Thus, I am very happy with involvement of civilians, particularly our RTD Youth Squad1 who join in the effort to enhance road safety awareness," he said.

"We currently have 43,142 RTD Youth Squad1 volunteers nationwide and out of this figure, a total of 3,291 volunteers are in Sabah, however we encourage more to join in this effort in order to reduce road accidents in our country," he added.

Meanwhile, Rozman Abdul Latip is appointed as the Sabah RTD Youth Squad1 Chief and Ainiliza Anizah Usli as his deputy.
