Kota Kinabalu: The agriculture sector is the pulse to the stability of the State's socio-economy and should be further improved. Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said most operators of food crops work in small sizes and are not economical.

"Production of food crops should be increased by applying new and modern technology, giving out incentives and credits as well as through the involvement and commitment of private parties and the opening of abandoned land.

"The small food crop operators have to compete to use land, especially paddy fields closest to the city, as many have been developed into residential areas. What more with many of them also been of old age."

He said this at the certificate presentation of the Integrated Skill Course for the 19th batch trainees from Putatan Integrated Agriculture Training Centre at the Jabatan Kebudayaan and Kesenian Negara auditorium, Friday.

At the same time, Yahya also told the trainees to not give up easily and to be diligent in achieving their goal.

He also called on government agencies and all departments to give support and advice to the trainees so that they would be successful in this field.

"You should not be quiet and only wait for government aid. You should be active and independent in finding opportunities and incentives offered by the Government.

"Meet with relevant authorities in the field you are in and get to know how you can begin you own business even if a small one."

He said although there will be many difficulties the trainees will face but that is common for anyone who is thriving to reach their goals.

Ardiean Arwin from Kudat received the Overall Excellent Trainee Award, while Ong Che Kiong from Lahad Datu received the Best Academic Trainee Award.

There were 38 trainees who received their certificates.
