Makaf most dynamic sports association

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Karate Federation's (Makaf) achievements, leadership, administration and dedication to develop the sport earned the 2014 Most Dynamic Sports Association Award from the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)."When speaking of Makaf, the sports fraternity and people are aware of the association's achievement. They have never failed to win medals for the country when competing in multi-sport competitions or tournaments," said SAM in a statement Monday.

Makaf which was formed in 1978 as the umbrella body for clubs in the country was recognised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and the National Sports Council (NSC) as the governing body for karate in the country.

Current Makaf President Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has been able to continue the good work of past presidents like Dr Leong Kwok Onn, Datuk Tan Tiong Hong, the late Tan Sri Megat Junid Megat Ayob, Datuk Henry Chin, Datuk Zulkifli Mat Nor.

In September 2014, the National karate squad came home from the Incheon Asian Games in South Korea with two gold and two bronze medals through Lim Chee Wei and Syakilla Salni (gold) and Shree Sharmini and Senthil Kumaran (bronze).

At the 22nd World Senior Karate Championship 2014 in Bremen, Germany from Nov 5-9, 2014, the karate squad managed to win a silver and bronze medal.

In the SEA Games history, karate has always been among the top contributors of gold medals for the country.

In the 1999 Brunei SEA Games, Malaysia won seven gold medals and improved on that feat by winning nine gold medals in Kuala Lumpur when Malaysia hosted the SEA Games and in Myanmar, two years ago, karate came back with seven gold medals. – Bernama

Among notable names who have contributed to the success of karate in the country are P. Arivalagan, R. Puvaneswaran, G. Yamini and Lim Chee Wei to name a few.

MAKAF are also known for being an active sports association, organising various activities like coaching clinics, courses, seminars and coaching courses at national and regional levels. – Bernama
