Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, on Wednesday, said the board members of the Sabah Sports Board (SSB) have a heavy responsibility to fulfil in that they must ensure the decisions they make must be accurate before it is implemented. He said this is important considering that the decisions they make have an impact to the development of Government-run or funded sports facility throughout the State.

"As we all know, the role of the Sabah Sports Board is to provide sports facilities for the society in general and the athletes so that through it a healthy and productive society is produced and at the same time, excellent athletes are created," he said.

He said this at the handing over of letters of appointment to board members for the period 2015-2018 at Likas Sports Complex.

He said that some facilities and sports complexes have been used as venues for national and international sports competitions. These, he said, has brought about huge benefits to the sports board and State.

There are now 12 sports complexes in Sabah run and managed by the SSB, he said.

"Hence, it is the duty and responsibility of the Sabah Sports Board that is headed by the board members to administer well these sports facilities so that it meet the objectives of its construction," he said.

Taking all that into account, he expressed his confidence with the ability of the board members.

Tawfiq said the board members are the main pillars in the corporate governance of the establishment.

"Its collective responsibility is leading and determining the halatuju (direction) and affairs of the Sabah Sports Board and that is a body that make effective decisions," he said.

He said that the board members are also responsible in the administration of the organisation regarding its performance and activities so that the interests of the government is taken into account," he said.

Hence, he said, the responsibility of the board members is indeed heavy.

In determining a decision, it must be really fine-tuned before it is agreed upon, he said.

"And, the decision must go through the proper regulations and procedures with full integrity," he said.

The State Government, he said, opined that statutory bodies such as the SSB must be managed by committed and effective as well as sensitive to changes.

To this end, Tawfiq said all board members must really understand their roles and responsibilities.

The board members for the period 2015-2018 are Datuk Louis Rampas (Chairman), Mahmud Ag Hussin (Deputy Chairman) while members comprise of Anthony C. Linggian, Masnah Mat Salleh, Kevin Lim Thein Phin, Husin Abdurahim, Padis Majingkin, Tahah Malisi, Datuk Suzannah Liaw, Datuk Mohd Dahali Matsin and Penyuki Matta.
