Kota Kinabalu: Sabahan Muaythai exponent, Vivian Teo Wee Vien has made the country proud in her maiden appearance in national colours at the Muaythai University World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.Vivian faced a host competitor, Yadrung Teahiran in the 57kg finals and clinched a silver medal for her debut effort.

"I am extremely happy to be able to bring home a silver medal for Sabah and Malaysia.

"I was informed that this is the highest achievement by a Malaysian female Muaythai athlete in the international level… it is still like a dream for me," said the 22-year-old nakmuay (Muaythai boxer) who carried the hope of the Malaysian Muaythai Association to win a medal in Bangkok.

Vivian disclosed that her opponent was highly experienced and strong, and she still has a lot of minuses to be improved.

"My technique is a bit inferior compared to the Thai fighter. My fight experience is also lesser and this influenced my performance.

"I need to fight more frequently in high level competitions to gain improvement."

She said, the experiences gained in her trip to Bangkok is different than her previous fights.

"My fight record was lesser compared to other exponents in my division who have more than 50 fights under their belts.

"Their moves, tactics, control rhythm, all of these elements are different and they are better than me," she said.

And her passion and will to make the country proud became her sole motivation to continue and fight.

Meanwhile, Vivian's coach and head coach in 66 Unifight team, Mohamad Ajman 'Maman' Ajmain and Soehandy Katni are equally happy for her win.

"We are proud as Vivian was given the trust to represent the country and she did not waste that faith by bringing home a silver medal.

"We are planning to give more exposure to Vivian in terms of training and competitions," Ajman said.

Based on the feedbacks from Vivian through her observations of the fighter's level from the Muaythai powerhouses, the coaching team will draft a programme to help improve her performance.

Apart from Vivian, the Malaysian contingent also included Ilham Mohamad and Seah Zhang Yu and they were escorted by national coach, Bernard Radin.

Ilham and Seah came home empty handed as they failed to shine in their respective divisions of the inaugural Muaythai University World Cup.
