Sandakan: About 6,000 State government servants will be retiring within the next five years.State Government Pensioners Association (PPKS) Deputy President Datuk Wilfred Lingham said because of this, PPKS is actively organising seminars and forums to disseminate knowledge and information to soon-to-be retirees.

"It is also intended to assist them in making decisions and solving problems after retirement," he said during the Pre-Retirement Seminar organised by PPKS and State Civil Service Department (JPANS) here, Wednesday.

The two-day programme was attended by about 110 participants from Sandakan, Telupid, Ranau, Kota Kinabatangan and Beluran.

Lingham said many retired government servants are struggling with financial management as their pensions are only 60 per cent of their last salary while some would receive their employee provident funds.

He said retirees would need to take into account several things such as family spending, children's education as well as utility bills. Retirees would also live as common people and can no longer rely on the government.

Through the programme, he said retirees will receive tips and advice on financial management so they would not fall into the trap of borrowing money from unlicensed moneylenders.

The seminar also encouraged retirees to register with PPKS as their platform to defend their rights. PPKS has only 3,000 members while the number of retirees in the State is about 47,000 people.
