Labuan: PAS here says the Labuan parliamentary constituency "rightfully" belongs to the party and it is determined to field a candidate in the next general election."There should be no confusion or misunderstanding on this matter," said Labuan PAS Chief Hamir Zahari, in response to a report quoting PKR Sabah Chairman, Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin, as saying that PKR would defend its right and contest in Labuan again in the next election.

Hamir clarified that the seat had been allocated to PAS since 1998.

He said the party made its electoral debut in Labuan in the 1999 general election and also contested in the two subsequent general elections.

"However, in the last general election, PAS was compelled to give way in the last minute despite our chosen candidate having been endorsed by PAS Secretary-General, Datuk Mustafa Ali, to use the party's symbol for the contest.

"Since PKR claimed it had a candidate of high calibre and with winning potential, as an act of goodwill and under the Pakatan Rakyat spirit, we made way," said Hamir.

He said what happened in the last election was due to special circumstances, adding that the Labuan seat still belonged to PAS.

PAS' first candidate here in the 1999 general election was Asbullah Mohammad, who contested under the Barisan Alternatif (BA) pact, with the support of PKR.

In the subsequent two elections, the PA candidate was Youth Chief Matussin Abdul Rahman, who gave a good fight to BN's Suhaili in 2004 by securing 3,186 votes.

PA fielded him again in the 2008 election. In the last election, the chosen PAS candidate but denied chance to contest was Hadnan Mohd.

Hamir said following DAP's persistent resistance to Hudud, the Islamic Penal Code, and thereby not showing the party's co-operation with PAS under the coalition spirit, PAS here was left with no choice but to suspend its relationship with DAP Labuan until further notice.

The press conference called by PAS was for specific issues related to allegations made by the CEO of a Penang institute, Zairil Khir Johari, in an online news portal outlining seven reasons why PR has no future due to PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Describing the allegations as mala fide and without basis but to cast doubts on the credibility and integrity of PAS president in particular and PAS in general, Hamir said the allegations should be withdrawn within 48 hours with an apology.

He said upon expiry of the given time, no further notice would be served to the writer but court action would be initiated for causing the damage to the party's image.
