Sandakan: Pain (auricular) specialist Professor Dr Harlem Shah said pain can be relieved using 'auricular therapy' or 'auricular acupuncture' without surgery or medication. His treatment involves inserting a titanium needle or special acupuncture needle into the ear lobe of a patient without causing injury.

"People suffering pain usually take painkillers. But I don't use medicines or painkillers. I believe in auricular therapy to ease pain," he said.

Dr Harlem was in Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan recently to conduct a seminar on pain relief.

The seminar was conducted at Sabah Hotel here in English and Cantonese although Dr Harlem also speaks in four other languages - Bahasa Malaysia, Thai, Japanese and Spanish.

When met by Daily Express, Dr Harlem said previously most of those attending his seminar have already consulted many doctors and some have even suffered from pain for more than 20 years.

Most of them were unable to walk but after a 20-minute session, the pain was gone, enabling them to walk. Dr Harlem had been doing this for the past 18 years but more vigorously over the last 10 years.

Treatment can be time-consuming so he can only treat about nine persons over nine hours daily.

To get recognition for his practice, he approached the Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) Unit at Ministry of Health Malaysia but the Ministry has yet to classify this category of medicine.

He is an acupuncturist but his specialty cannot be classified under acupuncture though he uses the same kind of needles to treat his patients.

Mastering the auricular therapy from a nerve expert in Austria, Dr Harlem claimed that his method of treatment is not Western medicine and does not produce adverse effects on patients.

It involved inserting needles into nerves in the ear to ease pain. The needles are left there for 20 minutes. No drugs are prescribed.

Some people have to be treated a few times, the effectiveness of treatment depend on the patient and situation."The philosophy is that healing comes from oneself and not the physician. My gift of cure is to get the person back on the correct path, and from there he is on his own.

"I get rid of the pain for you and you have to maintain it from there. You have to believe that you can heal yourself.

Your conscious mind and subconscious mind can heal you," he claimed. Most of his patients suffer from knee pain, sciatic nerve pain and others.

The three most common types of pain that patients come to him for treatment are trigeminal neuralgia (root canal), sciatica (nerve pain from the back to the legs) and spinal cord injury.

This seminar was sponsored by the Miri Traditional Chinese Physician Association, which is headed by Professor Dr Tan Kit Weng. Dr Harlem is the advisor of the association.
