Call to tighten Pagalungan border security

Keningau: Infrastructure Development Assistant Minister Datuk Bobbey Suan proposed the government tighten security at Pagalungan, a sub-district, located at the Kalimantan, Indonesian border. He said this would need cooperation from all enforcement agencies, including the police, Immigration Department and the National Registration Department among others.

District Police Chief DSP Douglas Nyeging Taong agreed with the proposal and said at present three police personnel are stationed to keep law and order in the Pagalungan area which has more than 130 villages and a population of about 6,000.

"The Keningau Police Station covers Tambunan, Nabawan, Keningau, Sook sub-district and Pagalungan sub-district and I assure that security is guaranteed in all the areas thanks to good cooperation between the people and the police," he said.

Bobbey also urged the people to cooperate with the police particularly in the interior to ensure peace and order which would indirectly help boost the people's economy.

He said cooperation between the people and the police force is important because without such cooperation, it would be difficult for police to conduct their duties.

Bobbey said this during a media conference after he officiated at the district-level 208th Police Day Anniversary which was celebrated simultaneously nationwide.

Also present were the Keningau District Officer Yusop Osman, Tambunan District Officer Thomas Logijin and Nabawan District Officer Fredian Gan among others.

Douglas said drug cases in the district have also increased compared to last year however illegal immigrant issues are still under control.

In Sandakan, District Police Chief ACP Zabidi Md. Zain praised his men and women for the two successful achievements last year.

Zabidi said the Sandakan police achieved success in its management last year when they got second place in the Station League Table Category B inspection.

The category, he said, was evaluated based on overall management of the Sandakan Police and evaluated by a non-governmental organisation namely MCPF who interviewed civilians during crime prevention campaigns conducted by the District Police Chief and other initiatives.

"The second achievement was for the Best Responsible Centre in Financial Index Reporting Management (FRIM)," he said after attending the 208th Police Day celebration held here.

He said there are a total of 105 such centres in the police force nationwide and Sandakan police were among the 18 centres awarded the four star rating.

"On Mac 11 this year, the Home Ministry announced Sandakan police are the best centre last year," he said.

Also present were District Police Chief ACP Zabidi Md. Zain, his Deputy Police Chief Supt Fadzil Mohd Ali, Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Sabah Branch Vice Chairman Tan Sri Andrew Liew and Sekong Assemblyman Datuk Samsudin Yahya among others.

Meanwhile, a total of six officers were awarded the State Police Commissioner Appreciation Certificate while 54 others, including eight media representatives were also given Appreciation Certificates.

In Lahad Datu, the District Police recorded a decreased of overall crime index thanks to cooperation between the people and security agencies as well as other government agencies.

District Police Chief ACP Hamzah Ahmad in his speech at the district-level 208th Police Day Celebration that the overall crime index to date showed a decrease by 51 cases compared to the same period last year.

He said only 67 cases were recorded this year compared to 118 cases in 2014. As for solved cases, a total of 85 per cent have been investigated and brought to court this year compared to 32.73 per cent over the same period last year.

"Four police stations under the administration of the District Police Headquarters also recorded a decrease in the crime index in which Lahad Datu Police Station recorded only 56 cases this year compared to 98 cases in 2014.

"Tungku Police Station recorded a decrease of seven cases, while Cenderawasih Police Station recorded a drop by five cases and Tambisan Police Station recorded a decrease by seven cases," he added.

According to Hamzah, the narcotics branch made 50 arrests in 2014 involving supply or possession of drugs compared to 36 arrests in 2013. For cases under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act, 32 arrests were made last year compared to nine in the previous year.

The Narcotics Branch also made 938 arrests in 2014 compared to 680 in 2013 in the case of drug abuse and seized 14,602.76 gram of Syabu in 2014 compared to only 1,275.81 gram in 2013 resulting in an increase of 1,044 per cent.

"For traffic cases, a total of 213 accident cases were recorded from January to March last year, compared to only 148 cases for the same period, this year involving a decrease by 65 cases or 31 per cent.

"All this success could not be achieved without the continuous efforts of all members of the police and the cooperation from the people in providing information to us. With the continuous effort, cooperation from public and other security agencies, we will be able to face any challenges," he said.

Hamzah also urged his men to always be ready even though Lahad Datu is secure and under control, adding that they must carry out respective responsibilities with full dedication and integrity.

Also present were Lahad Datu Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal, Tungku Assemblyman Kamarudin Hamid, Datuk Mohd Suhaili Said, and District Officer Iman Ali and Rajesh Datuk Yusof.
