Eddie hopes to book his SEA Games ticket

Kota Kinabalu: Eddie Edward JR is just one race away from qualifying for the SEA Games in Singapore in June.The sprinter will be taking part in the 100m final of the 92nd Malaysian Athletics Open Championship Malaysian Open at the Bukit Jalil Stadium today (Saturday) after registering a fine 10.74seconds in the semifinal on Friday.

It will be an enormous task as he will need to run a 10.55 seconds to make it to the national squad.

This is only his second major competition this season after the Australian National Open last week where he ran a 10.89 to finish second.

He had earlier said that the Australian Open was his first competition of the year so it wasn't a bad result under the circumstances.

"It was my first competition of the season. My time in the semifinal was much better in 10.85s and I could have run faster if the final was held on the same day.

"Unfortunately it was held the following day and early in the morning at 8.15am as well, so the time was not up to the mark as a result."

Meanwhile, in the semifinal of the men 100m on Friday, Tonga Edmund ran 10.89seconds but failed to make it to the finals finishing in ninth place.

Also qualified for the women 100m final is Fathin Mohd Yusuf who won in the semifinal.

The State contigent led by team manager Jeffery Datuk Ismail and coaches Ali Aman, Aron Utad, Mario Pajarillo,and Ceril Yapp only targeted two gold medals.
