Penampang: Government agencies as well as public and private institutions are urged to strengthen collaboration in enhancing skills training among youths in Sabah."Our objective is to offer better opportunities to all youths in increasing their knowledge on skills in various fields to meet the market demand for manpower," said Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Siringan Gubat.

"It is through this sort of exhibition that we are capable of extending the access towards quality training skills," he said when launching the Training Skills Exhibition at Buhavan Square, Dongongon here, Thursday.

"I also understand that there will also be career planning talks providing information on how to attend a job interview and ways of seeking a job," he said.

Therefore, he hoped that the participants will make full use of the opportunity given to them in gaining extra knowledge provided by the institutions.

"I also hope that the programme will create more awareness among the people on the importance of skills training in achieving success in their career as well as to increase the nation's economy status," he said.

So far, according to him, they had received positive response in terms of the application for skills training among youths, however, due to the limited capacity, they had to accept only those of interested applicants.

Human Resource Department (JPSM) Director Billy Yumbod said that they received 1, 133 applications last year but could only approve about 200 of them.

"The application for the 2016 intake will start in October and we will have it advertised in local newspapers," he said.

However, Siringan said that those who failed to be accepted at JPSM could try to apply at other academies or institutions that offer skills training.

He also said that the department's success rate is high even though not all of the applicants managed to get a job.

"But it has attracted a lot of our youths especially those who failed to pursue their studies at a higher level," he said, adding that the department offers a total of 13 courses and is one of the oldest training providers in the State.
