Perlis: Technicians who are important movers, especially in the industrial sector, will be appropriately recognised, when a new bill to recognise the profession is approved soon.Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry deputy secretary-general (policy) Datuk Dr Azhar Mohd Yahya, however, said the bill was still at the discussion stage in Dewan Negara.

"The bill is named the Malaysia Technology Board Bill to enable technicians to use the title, such as Ir for engineer," he told reporters here.

He was representing Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Mohd Diah to close the 2015 Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Polytechnic (PTSS) Innovation, Project Presentation & Exhibition (2015 IProPEx).

He said the move was in appreciation of the contribution of the profession and to make it more dynamic as the number of technicians was expected to touch 1.6 to 1.7 million or 50 per cent of the 3.3 million competent, efficient and highly skilled workers in 2020.

In Dr Abu Bakar's speech text which was read by Dr Mohd Azhar, the deputy minister said Malaysia must be prepared to be more competitive to generate a high income economy.

"Currently, Malaysia only has 25.5 per cent highly skilled workers of the total of 12.7 million workers. This must be increased a singlefold to at least 50 per cent of the workers in 2020," he said.

Dr Abu Bakar said the Malaysia Education Development Plan stressed on producing graduates with high skills, and in this context, polytechnics were given an important role in achieving this plan.

He said the collaboration of the industry and polytechnics, which had produced innovative ideas and products which could be commercialised, showed that the transformation of polytechnics had succeeded.

Dr Mohd Azhar also witnessed PTSS director Sulong Yahaya signing a note of understanding with four companies which agreed to have collaborations with the polytechnic during the ceremony. – Bernama
